Macro-sized diamond films have been widely applied as the electrode for electrochemical and electroanalytical applications. Due to the non-uniform doping in diamond, boundary effects, and the varied ratios of graphite to diamond, only averaged electrochemical signals are detected over the full electrode. The studies of diamond electrochemistry at the nanoscale are thus highly required. In this chapter we overview recent progress and achievements about electrochemical properties and applications of diamond nanostructures and nanoparticles. After a brief introduction of the formation of these nanostructures and nanoparticles, electrochemical behavior of diamond nanostructures (e.g., diamond nanotexures, nanowires, networks, etc.) and nanoparticles (undoped, doped nanoparticles) in the presence/absence of redox probes is summarized. Their electroanalytical (e.g., electrochemical, biochemical sensing, etc.) and electrochemical (e.g., energy storage using capacitors and batteries, electrocatalysis, etc.) applications are shown. Diamond nanoelectrode array is introduced and highlighted as a promising tool to investigate diamond electrochemistry at the nanoscale as well.

COMPARISON OF THE ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE OF DISUBSTITUTED FERROCENES.

We have measured the optical absorption of gaseous ferrocene, 1,1 prime -dimethylferrocene, 1,1 prime -dibromoferrocene, and 1,1 prime -dichloroferrocene using synchrotron radiation. From these data we have estimated the ligand field parameters and noted increasing e//2//g(d) to Cp( pi ) overlap with increasing charge transfer from the Cp ring to the substitution. The optical absorption spectra for ferrocene, dibromoferrocene, and dichloroferrocene are remarkably similar. The halogen substitutions result in greater Cp( pi ) to e//2//g-(d(x2-y2)) hybridization. The e//2//g orbitals become more bonding while the a//1//g and e//1//g orbitals become more non-bonding or antibonding. This change is reflected in a change of the ligand field parameters.

Influence of methylimidazole isomers on ferrocene-catalysed nitrogen doped carbon nanotube synthesis

Nitrogen doped multi-walled carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) were synthesized by the solid state pyrolysis of ferrocenylmethylimidazole or a mixture of ferrocene (FcH)/i-methylimidazole (i = 1, 2 and 4) at 800 C at different ratios in sealed quartz tubes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images confirmed that the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) obtained were doped with nitrogen to give nitrogen doped multi-walled CNTs (N-CNTs). N-CNTs showed bamboo-like structures for the CNTs produced from both ferrocenylmethylimidazole and the mixtures of FcH/i-methylimidazole at varying ratios. The study revealed that the different imidazoles produced different types/size distributions of shaped carbon nanomaterials (SCNMs) including N-CNTs with different diameters. An investigation of the bamboo structures revealed that the three methylimidazole isomers led to tubes with different individual bamboo compartment distances and different morphologies including different N contents. This confirms that the synthesis of N-CNTs is determined by fragments (ratios, types) produced by decomposition of reactants at high temperature.

Investigation on the potential use of the mimetic peroxidase-catalyzed reaction of hydrogen peroxide and catechol in aqueous-organic mixtures

The reaction between hydrogen peroxide and catechol catalyzed by mimetic peroxidase hemin has been adapted to determination of trace amounts of H 2O2. The present work employs hemin as mimetic peroxidase to catalyze the oxidation of catechol by H2O2. Its intermediate is obtained in aqueous-organic two phases and the absorption peaks at 260 nm. The catalytic optimum conditions for hemin-H2O 2-catechol two phases system were studied. As low as 2 ¡Á 10-6 M H2O2 could be detected with a linear range from 3 ¡Á 10-6 M to 1 ¡Á 10-4 M via spectrophotometry.
