The wide dissemination of catalytic protocols in academic and industrial laboratories is facilitated by the development of catalysts that are not only highly active but also user-friendly, stable to moisture, air and long term storage and easy to prepare on a large scale. Herein we describe a protocol for the Heck-Mizoroki reaction mediated by cyclopalladN-dimethylbenzylamine (dmba) ligated ne, 1,3-bdot;HCl in refluxing acetonitrile in air in the presence of K2CO in iates the H bromides in reagent grade NMP at the 0.1-2 mol% range without the need for rigorous anhydrous techniques or a glovebox, and is active even in air. The catalyst is capable of achieving very high levels of catalytic activity (TON of up to 5.22 ¡Á 105) for the coupling of a deactivated arylbromide, p-bromoanisole, with tBu acrylate as a benchmark substrate pair. A wide range of aryl bromides, iodides and, for the first time with a NHC-Pd catalyst, a triflate was coupled with diverse acrylate derivatives (nitrile, tert-butyl ester and amides) and styrene derivatives. The use of excess (>2 equiv.) of the aryl bromide and tert-butyl acrylate leads to mixture of tert-butyl beta,beta-diarylacrylate and tert-butyl cinnamate derivatives depending on the substitution pattern of the aryl bromide. Electron rich m- and p-substituted arylbromides give the diarylated products exclusively, whereas electron-poor aryl bromides give predominantly mono-arylated products. For o-substituted aryl bromides, no doubly arylated products could be obtained under any conditions. Overall, the active catalyst (IMes-Pd) shows higher activity with electron-rich aryl halides, a marked difference compared with the more commonly used phosphane-Pd or non-ligated Pd catalysts.

Pd-mediated synthesis of linked conjugated tri- and penta-ferrocenyl complexes

A facile synthesis of new conjugated oligo-ferrocenyl compounds is described. The synthetic method consists of a two step procedure, which combines olefination by the Wittig procedure and Pd-mediated C-C coupling, leading to high yields of tri- and penta-ferrocenyl complexes. The crystal structures of the 1,1?-bissubstituted ferrocenyl precursors are described. The electrochemical analysis of the compounds obtained, reveals that the peripheral ferrocenyl units display an equivalent redox behavior, with a large separation of the peak corresponding to the central ferrocenyl unit.

Narrowly dispersed diblock copolymers containing poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] or poly(nonafluorohexyl methacrylate) [PF9MA] as the first block and poly(ferrocenylmethyl methacrylate) [PFMMA] as the second block, were prepared by anionic polymerization for the first time. Disordered bulk morphologies in the case of PMMA-b-PFMMA were observed and explained in terms of low Flory?Huggins interaction parameter (chi ? 0.04). In the case of PF9MA-b-PFMMA hexagonally packed cylinder morphology (HEX) was substantiated from TEM and SAXS observations. Furthermore, high incompatibility between PF9MA and PFMMA blocks allowed for the formation of well-ordered ferrocene containing cylinders on silica substrate upon exposure of the thin films to a saturated solvent vapor. It was shown that the cylinder orientation, parallel or perpendicular to the surface, could easily be controlled by appropriate choice of the solvent and without the need for preliminary surface modification, for example by means of grafted brush layer.

The phosphorus-chiral diphosphine 1,1?-bis(1-naphthylphenylphosphino)ferrocene (1a) and its new electronically modified derivatives 1b-d bearing methoxy and/or trifluoromethyl groups in para positions of the phenyl rings were investigated as ligands in rhodium-catalyzed (asymmetric) hydroformylation. Depending on ligand basicity, high-pressure NMR and IR characterization of the respective (diphosphine) rhodium dicarbonyl hydride precursor complexes revealed subtle differences in the occupation of bis-equatorial (ee) and equatorialapical (ea) coordination geometries. The high ee:ea ratio of the four complexes contrasted with the clear ea preference observed for the related achiral compound dppf (1,1?-bis-(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene). In the hydroformylation of styrene the best result (50% ee) was obtained by employing the best pi-acceptor ligand 1c, incorporating two p-trifluoromethyl substituents. Substrate electronic variations using 4-methoxystyrene and 4-chlorostyrene showed a pronounced influence on turnover frequencies, branched/linear aldehyde product ratios, and enantiodiscrimation, whereas in the hydroformylation of 1-octene ligand electronic perturbations did affect only the rate, but not the selectivity of the reaction.

New compounds of tetradentate Schiff bases with vanadium(IV) and vanadium(V)

A new range of potentially tetradentate proligands, H2L, derived from aromatic aldehydes and ketones and aliphatic diamines has been prepared. Their vanadyl(IV) and vanadyl(V) complexes [VO(L)] and [VO(L)]+, and also some adducts [VO(L)?VO(L)]+, have been synthesized. The structures of four selected complexes have been determined and it is shown that these must be a result of both steric and electronic factors that make prediction of conformation and stacking difficult. The adducts [VO(L)?VO(L)]+ have structures that persist in solution in dichloromethane, where they can undergo redox chemistry, but they apparently dissociate into their component complexes in the donor solvent acetonitrile.
