Electric Literature of 1273-86-5, hemistry, like all the natural sciences, begins with the direct observation of nature— in this case, of matter. In a document type is Article, molecular formula is C11H3FeO, molecular weight is 206.99, and a compound is mentioned, 1273-86-5, Ferrocenemethanol, introducing its new discovery.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), derived from functionalized graphene precursors are graphene sheets a few nanometers in the lateral dimension having a several-layer thickness. They are zero-dimensional materials with quantum confinement and edge site effects. Intense research interest in GQDs is attributed to their unique physicochemical phenomena arising from the sp2- bonded carbon nanocore surrounded with edged plane functional moieties. In this work, GQDs are synthesized by both solvothermal and hydrothermal techniques, with the optimal size of 5 nm determined using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, with additional UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, revealing electronic band signatures in the blue-violet region. Their potential in fundamental (direct electron transfer) and applied (enzyme-based glucose biosensor) electrochemistry has been practically realized. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was immobilized on glassy carbon (GC) electrodes modified with GQDs and functionalized graphene (graphene oxide and reduced form). The cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used for characterizing the direct electron transfer kinetics and electrocatalytical biosensing. The well-defined quasi-reversible redox peaks were observed under various electrochemical environment and conditions (pH, concentration, scan rate) to determine the diffusion coefficient (D) and first-order electron transfer rate (kET). The cyclic voltammetry curves showed homogeneous ion transport behavior for GQD and other graphenebased samples with D ranging between 8.45 × 10?9 m2 s?1 and 3 × 10?8 m2 s?1 following the order of GO < rGO < GQD < GQD (with FcMeOH as redox probe) < GOx/rGO < GOx/GO < HRP/GQDs < GOx/GQDs. The developed GOx-GQDs biosensor responds efficiently and linearly to the presence of glucose over concentrations ranging between 10 muM and 3 mM with a limit of detection of 1.35 muM and sensitivity of 0.00769 muA muM?1·cm?2 as compared with rGO (0.025 muA muM?1 cm?2, 4.16 muM) and GO (0.064 muA muM?1 cm?2, 4.82 muM) nanosheets. The relatively high performance and stability of GQDs is attributed to a sufficiently large surface-to-volume ratio, excellent biocompatibility, abundant hydrophilic edges, and a partially hydrophobic plane that favors GOx adsorption on the electrode surface and versatile architectures to ensure rapid charge transfer and electron/ion conduction (<10 ms). We also carried out similar studies with other enzymatic protein biomolecules on electrode surfaces prepared from GQD precursors for electrochemical comparison, thus opening up potential sensing applications in medicine as well as bio-nanotechnology. In conclusion, we affirm that quantitative kinetic descriptions of catalytic behavior continue to serve as an indispensable tool.Electric Literature of 1273-86-5. In the present ?genomic era? and in the developing world of DNA chips, DNA detection based on intercalation of specific molecules is of particular interest because the detection process is largely independent of the sequence of the target DNA. In this work, an acridine-orange-based intercalation compound, which was tethered to deglycosylated glucose oxidase was synthesized ad hoc and investigated for its ability to interact with dsDNA. Amperometric detection of DNA hybridization was achieved by signal amplification based on the catalytic oxidation of glucose by DNA-bound glucose oxidase. A clear distinction between dsDNA and ssDNA was achieved by careful design of a DNA-modified electrode surface and prevention of nonspecific adsorption of the acridine-orange-modified enzyme by implementing a potential-assisted immobilization method.

By activating Si-H bonds, poly(hydromethylsiloxane) can be covalently bound in a first step to various metal or polymer surfaces. In a second step, unreacted Si-H bonds can be brought to react with organic compounds having adequate functional groups such as double or triple bonds, carbonyl or hydroxyl groups. This scheme is used to bind biorecognition groups to solids. The novel concept is demonstrated by attaching a newly synthesized biotin derivative to Au. It is shown that the immobilized biotin is capable of binding streptavidin.

A series of complexes of transition metal ions (Cr3+, Mn 2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn 2+) and of lanthanide ions (La3+, Nd3+, Gd 3+, Dy3+, Lu3+) with the anions of ferrocenylmethyl-L-cysteine [(C5H5)Fe(C5H 4CH(R)SCH2CH(NH3+)CO 2-] (L1) and with the dianions of 1,1?-ferrocenylbis(methyl-L-cysteine) [Fe(C5H 4CH(R)SCH2CH(NH3+) CO 2-)2] (R = H, Me, Ph) (L2) as N,O,S-donors were prepared. With the monocysteine ferrocene derivative L 1 as ligands complexes [MIIL12] or [CrIIIL12]Cl type complexes are formed whereas the bis(cysteine) ligand L2 yields insoluble complexes of type [ML2]n, presumably as coordination polymers. The electrochemical characteristics of bare and surface-modified screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) were compared using voltammetric responses of common redox probes to determine the potential role of nanomaterials in previously documented signal enhancement. SPCEs modified with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by layer-by-layer (LbL) electrostatic adsorption were previously reported to exhibit an increase in voltammetric signal for Fe(CN)6 3?/4? that corresponds to an improvement of 102% in electroactive surface area over bare SPCEs. AuNP-modified SPCEs prepared by the same LbL strategy using the polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) here were found to provide no beneficial increase in electroactive surface area over bare SPCEs. Though similar improvement in voltammetric signal of Fe(CN)6 3?/4? was found for AuNP/PDDA-modified compared to bare SPCEs in these studies, results with other redox couples ferrocene methanol (FcMeOH/FcMeOH+) and Ru(NH3)6 3+/2+ indicated no difference between the electroactive surface areas of modified and bare SPCEs. Furthermore, gold present on AuNP/PDDA-modified SPCEs accounted for only 62 (±12)% of the electroactive surface area. The previously reported improvement in electroactive surface area that was attributed to the inclusion of AuNPs on the SPCE surface appears to have resulted from a misinterpretation of the non-ideal behavior of Fe(CN)63? as a redox probe for bare SPCEs.

Well-ordered, tightly-packed (surface coverage 0.97 × 10-9 mol cm-2) monolayer films of 1,4-bis((4-ethynylphenyl)ethynyl)benzene (1) on gold are prepared via a simple self-assembly process, taking advantage of the ready formation of alkynyl C-Au sigma-bonds. Electrochemical measurements using [Ru(NH3)6]3+, [Fe(CN)6]3-, and ferrocenylmethanol [Fe(eta5-C5H4CH2OH)(eta5-C5H5)] redox probes indicate that the alkynyl C-Au contacted monolayer of 1 presents a relatively low barrier for electron transfer. This contrasts with monolayer films on gold of other oligo(phenylene ethynylene) derivatives of comparable length and surface coverage, but with different contacting groups. Additionally, a low voltage transition (Vtrans = 0.51 V) from direct tunneling (rectangular barrier) to field emission (triangular barrier) is observed. This low transition voltage points to a low tunneling barrier, which is consistent with the facile electron transport observed through the C-Au contacted self-assembled monolayer of 1.

Here we investigate the use of 3D printed graphene/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) electrodes for quantifying trace amounts of Hg, Pb, and Cd. We prepared cylindrical electrodes by sealing a 600 mum diameter graphene/PLA filament in a pipette tip filled with epoxy. We characterized the electrodes using scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry in ferrocene methanol. The physical characterization showed a significant amount of disorder in the carbon structure and the electrochemical characterization showed quasi-reversible behavior without any electrode pretreatment. We then used unmodified graphene/PLA electrode to quantify Hg, and Pb and Cd in 0.01 M HCl and 0.1 M acetate buffer using square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. We were able to quantify Hg with a limit of detection (LOD) of 6.1 nM (1.2 ppb), but Pb and Cd did not present measurable peaks at concentrations below ?400 nM. We improved the LODs for Pb and Cd by depositing Bi microparticles on the graphene/PLA and, after optimization, achieved clear stripping peaks at the 20 nM level for both ions (4.1 and 2.2 ppb for Pb2+ and Cd2+, respectively). The results obtained for all three metals allowed quantification below the US Environmental Protection Agency action limits in drinking water.

A novel flow injection analysis (FIA) system suitable for measurements of glucose in blood serum is developed. In the proposed FIA system, a new kind of glucose sensor based on composite polymer films and well-immobilized enzyme was fabricated. An electrochemical technique of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for the characterization of the newly fabricated biosensor. A wide linear range of 0.1-50 mM for glucose detection was reported in virtue of the new configuration of the sensor and the developed FIA system. The reproducibility of signals was quite good with relative standard deviation (RSD) values for n = 4 injections (typically 5.7%). Animal blood serum was directly injected and assayed in this simulative physiological system. Good analytical recovery of glucose spiked into serum samples, with recoveries in the range of 96.7-105.0%, was exhibited. Under optimized conditions, detection of serum glucose for normal people and diabetics using our proposed method is possible.

We described a hybrid system of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) and scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) with ion current feedback nanopositioning control for simultaneous imaging of noncontact topography and spatial distribution of electrochemical species. A nanopipette/nanoring electrode probe provided submicrometer resolution of the electrochemical measurement on surfaces with complex topology. The SECM/SICM probe had an aperture radius of 220 nm. The inner and outer radii of the SECM Au nanoring electrode were 330 and 550 nm, respectively. Characterization of the probe was performed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and approach curve measurements. SECM/SICM was applied to simultaneous imaging of topography and electrochemical responses of enzymes (horse radish peroxidase (HRP) and glucose oxidase (GOD)) and single live cells (A6 cells, superior cervical ganglion (SCG) cells, and cardiac myocytes). The measurements revealed the distribution of activity of the enzyme spots on uneven surfaces with submicrometer resolution. SECM/SICM acquired high resolution topographic images of cells together with the map of electrochemical signals. This combined technique was also applied to the evaluation of the permeation property of electroactive species through cellular membranes.

The electrolytes used in enzymatic biosensors or biofuel cells have always been considered to be inert. However, recent studies have demonstrated that this assumption is not correct and that the nature of the electrolyte needs to be considered. Ion-specific interactions can occur with the faradaic response observed in both direct and mediated electron transfer being modulated by the nature of the salt used in solution. Specific ion effects arise from the Hofmeister series, which is well established in studies of protein systems but not in electrochemical studies of redox enzymes. Recent experimental and theoretical work on explaining the Hofmeister effect is described.
