The biofilm growth was monitored through adopting riboflavin as an electrochemical probe during the approach of the microelectrode to the biofilm external surface. This method allows in vivo and in situ biofilm monitoring at different growth stages without destructive manipulation. Furthermore, the biofilm growth monitoring results have been proved to be relatively accurate through observation under confocal laser scanning microscopy. We further applied this method to investigate the effects of four environmental factors (the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, sodium lactate, riboflavin as well as the electrode potential) on S. oneidensis MR-1 biofilm development.

We report biodegradable electroactive polymer (EAP)-based materials and their application as drug delivery devices. The sensor is based on the immobilization of an ultra-thin layer of glucose oxidase on to a gold-nanoparticle-covered carbon fiber microelectrode. Our electrode, by altering the potential applied at the sensor surface, allows for the high-speed recording of both glucose and dopamine. We demonstrate that, even though glucose is electrochemically detected indirectly through the enzymatic product and the electroactive dopamine is sensed directly, when exposing the sensor surface to a mixture of the two analytes, fluctuations in glucose and dopamine concentrations can be visualized with similar speed and at a millisecond time scale. Hence, by minimizing the enzyme coating thickness at the sensor surface, dual detection of glucose and dopamine can be realized at the same sensor surface and at time scales necessary for monitoring fast metabolic alterations during neurotransmission.

This work reports monoamine oxidase (MAO)/horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and diamine oxidase (DAO)/horseradish peroxidase (HRP) based biosensors using screen-printed carbon electrodes for the determination of biogenic amines (BA). The enzymes have been covalently immobilized onto the carbon working electrode, previously modified by an aryl diazonium salt, using hydroxysuccinimide and carbodiimide. The detection has been performed by measuring the cathodic current due to the reduction of the mediator hydroxymethylferrocene at a low potential, 250. mV vs screen-printed Ag/AgCl reference electrode. The experimental conditions for the enzymes immobilization, as well as for the main variables that can influence the chronoamperometric current have been optimized by the experimental design methodology. Under these optimum conditions, the disposable biosensors have been characterized. A linear response range from 0.2 up to 1.6 muM and from 0.4 to 2.4 muM of histamine was obtained for DAO/HRP and MAO/HRP based biosensors, respectively. The biosensor construction was highly reproducible, yielding relative standard deviations of 10% and 11% in terms of sensitivity for DAO/HRP and MAO/HRP based biosensors, respectively. The capability of detection, 0.18 ± 0.01 muM in the case of DAO/HRP and 0.40 ± 0.04 muM (alpha=0.05 and beta=0.005) for MAO/HRP based biosensors, and the biosensor sensitivity towards different BA has also been analyzed. Finally, the developed biosensors have been applied to the determination of the total amine content in fish samples.
