Operation of the scanning electrochemical microscope used in feedback mode over a coated metal allows changes in the state of the coating surface to be monitored during immersion in aqueous electrolytes. This paper reports changes in the coating induced by specific anions in the electrolyte in situ during immersion. Significant surface roughening is observed for immersion times shorter than 1 day when the electrolyte contains chloride ions. This effect is also observed when the oxygen dissolved in the electrolytic phase is employed as redox mediator for SECM imaging. The coated system exposed to chloride-free electrolytes containing sulphate or nitrate maintains a featureless topography within the same time scale. The observed features are due to the nucleation and growth of blisters at the metal/coating interface induced by chloride ions in the environment. The implication is that ionic migration occurs simultaneously with the absorption of water by the coating already from the beginning of exposure to the aqueous environment. The unique role of chloride ions compared with sulphate or nitrate ions towards coating performance has been established at a very early stage following immersion of the sample.

Water in a Soft Confinement: Structure of Water in Amorphous Sorbitol

The structure of water in 70 wt % sorbitol-30 wt % water mixture is investigated by wide-angle neutron scattering (WANS) as a function of temperature. WANS data are analyzed using empirical potential structure refinement to obtain the site-site radial distribution functions (RDFs). Orientational structure of water is represented using OW-OW-OW triangles distributions and a tetrahedrality parameter, q, while water-water correlation function is used to estimate size of water clusters. Water structure in the sorbitol matrix is compared with that of water confined in nanopores of MCM41. The results indicate the existence of voids in the sorbitol matrix with the length scale of approximately 5 A, which are filled by water. At 298 K, positional water structure in these voids is similar to that of water in MCM41, whereas there is a difference in the tetrahedral (orientational) arrangement. Cooling to 213 K strengthens tetrahedrality, with the orientational order of water in sorbitol becoming similar to that of confined water in MCM41 at 210 K, whereas further cooling to 100 K does not introduce any additional changes in the tetrahedrality. The results obtained allow us to propose, for the first time, that such confinement of water in a sorbitol matrix is the main reason for the lack of ice formation in this system.

Semiconductor Property and Corrosion Behavior of Passive Film Formed on Steel with Zinc Coating in 5% NaCl Solution

The initial stage of corrosion behavior and the semiconductor property of a passive film formed on steel with zinc coating were investigated in 5?wt.% NaCl solution using scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potential-capacitance measurement and the Mott?Schottky analysis method. The SECM test results reveal that the Faradic currents on the tip of the ultramicro electrode decreased with the extension of immersion time, suggesting that the coating was slowly degrading, and the water and ions gradually permeated into the coating. The tip current remained stable without obvious bursting and swelling, which revealed that no blister occurred inside the coating. EIS results also support the above conclusion, especially for long-term immersion. The potential-capacitance and Mott?Schottky analysis show that the water and ions gradually entered into the coating during the immersion process, while at the same time the coating showed the characteristics of n-type semiconductor. As the time elapsed, the capacitance value decreased and the thickness of the space charge layer declined. The decrease in the slope of the Mott?Schottky curves suggested the simultaneous increase of the carrier density, and the coating was degrading. SEM observation also exhibits an obvious coating degradation after immersion compared with the previous coating without immersion in solution.

Patterning of L10 FePt nanoparticles with ultra-high coercivity for bit-patterned media

L10-ordered FePt nanoparticles (NPs) with ultra-high coercivity were directly prepared from a new metallopolyyne using a one-step pyrolysis method. In situ monitoring of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 biofilm growth on gold electrodes by using a Pt microelectrode

Much attention has been focused on electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) in the application of bioelectrochemical systems (BESs). Studying the EAB biofilm growth mechanism as well as electron transfer mechanism provides a route to upgrade BES performance. But an effective bacterial growth monitoring method on the biofilm scale is still absent in this field. In this work, electrode-attached bacterial biofilms formed by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 were dynamically monitored through a microelectrode method. For S. oneidensis MR-1, a respiratory electron transport chain is associated with the secretion of riboflavin, severing as the cofactor to the outer membrane c-type cytochromes. The biofilm growth was monitored through adopting riboflavin as an electrochemical probe during the approach of the microelectrode to the biofilm external surface. This method allows in vivo and in situ biofilm monitoring at different growth stages without destructive manipulation. Furthermore, the biofilm growth monitoring results have been proved to be relatively accurate through observation under confocal laser scanning microscopy. We further applied this method to investigate the effects of four environmental factors (the concentrations of dissolved oxygen, sodium lactate, riboflavin as well as the electrode potential) on S. oneidensis MR-1 biofilm development.

Host-guest complexation: A convenient route for the electroreduction of diazonium salts in aqueous media and the formation of composite materials

Electrochemical grafting of a water-insoluble diazonium salt in aqueous media onto an electrode surface was achieved by host-guest complexation. 1-(2-Bisthienyl)-4-aminobenzene (BTAB) was solubilized in a water/beta- cyclodextrin solution (beta-CD). The corresponding diazonium salt was generated in situ then electroreduced. This process leads to the attachment of bithiophene or short oligothiophene groups to the electrode surface. The modified surfaces were analyzed by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrochemical investigations show that the waterbased modified surface is similar to one generated in acetonitrile without beta-CD. Thus, the attached organic layer behaves like an electrochemical switch (above some threshold potential, a soluble external probe is oxidized, but the oxidized form cannot be reduced). The modified surfaces consist of grafted bisthienylbenzene (BTB) and cyclodextrins that can be removed from the surface. This procedure may be considered as a new means of creating a surface made of submicrometric holes in an organic semiconducting layer.
